Snook Fishing Charters – Fort Myers & Sanibel

The Snook ranges in size from 16 to 30 pounds, with the world record for a Snook of 53 pounds, 10 ounces, caught in Costa Rica.

The current official record for Florida is 44 pounds, 3 ounces. The Snook is easily identified by its most distinctive feature of a lateral black strip that runs down its side from head to tail. This tropical species has a range from the Caribbean up to Florida, mainly located in the southern half of the state. The Snook is a distant relative of the Tarpon, and has many similar features.

Trophy Size Snook!

on a Fishing Charter with Capt. Clarence Reed

We are very fortunate that the local waters of Sanibel and Fort Myers are home to many Snook.  They are an aggressive fish and are known for their long runs and acrobatic jumps. It’s truly a great sport fish and we can help you catch your first Snook or maybe a trophy Snook. We use live bait to entice the Snook and also live chum to really get them in the eating mood. They can be caught on artificial lures, flies and live shrimp as well.

Sea Reed charters specializes in catching Snook of all sizes year round.

Snook cannot tolerate cold water and if the water temp gets under 65 for a long period of time, they can get lethargic and even die. About 5 years ago, we had a cold winter and it really devastated the Snook population. Many fish that did not make it into deeper water died. Snook season was then closed for 3 years and they have really bounced back. We have many small to medium size fish and larger fish are starting to be more plentiful, but it takes some time for them to grow that large. The slot on a Snook to harvest is 28″-33″ and, in my opinion, that is not the fish to kill. Most large Snook are females and those are our breeders which we need to preserve. The other thing is that a Snook grows quickly until it gets to approximately 24″ then it slows down drastically, so a 30″ fish could be 6 or 7 years old. I believe we should harvest the mid-range fish and let the breeders keep breeding.
